Biography of B. J. Habibie

Prof. DR (HC). Ing. Dr. Sc. Mult. Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie or B.J. Habibie (1936-2019) was one of the greatest man in Indonesia and the world. He was one of the smartest person in Indonesia and was an expert on flight engineering. He was known as "Bapak Teknologi Indonesia" (Indonesian Father of Technology). He was also the third president of Indonesia.

He was born in Pare-Pare, South Sulawesi on June 25th, 1936. He was the fourth child of the family and had 7 siblings. His father, Alwi Abdul Jalil Habibie, was from Gorontalo ethnic. Meanwhile, his mother, R.A. Tuti Marini Puspowardojo, was from Java ethnic. His wife, Hasri Ainun Besari, studied in Medical Faculty Universitas Indonesia and became a doctor. But, after Habibie and Ainun got married on May 12th, 1962, Ainun became a housewife. They have two children, Ilham Akbar Habibie and Thareq Kemal Habibie.

Habibie studied in Sekolah Menengah Atas Kristen Dago. After that, he studied mechanical engineering in Institut Teknologi Bandung in 1954. One year later, he continued his study in RWTH Aachen, West German. He studied flight engineering there. After 10 years of education, he received diplom ingenieur degree in 1960 and doktor ingenieur degree in 1965 with summa cum laude predicate.

After studying flight engineering, Habibie worked in Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm, a flight company in Hamburg, German. Until 1973, he went back to Indonesia because of a request from the second president of Indonesia, Soeharto. After arriving in Indonesia, he became the research and technology minister in Indonesia from 1978 until 1998. In 1998, he became the third president of Indonesia after the fall of Soeharto and Orde Baru.

He saw that the condition of Indonesia after the fall of Soeharto is chaotic.Therefore, after he got the power of president, he made a cabinet. He tried to get support from IMF and donor country community for economy recovery program. He also freed political prisoner and decreased the control of freedom to give opinion and organizational activity. He also made anti-monopoly law, region autonomy law, and many other laws.

He only served as a president for a year because in 1999, he allowed Timor Timur Province to have a referendum. After that, Timor Timur became a nation on August 30th, 1999. Until then, he didn't want to become a president anymore.

After his fall from the president chair, he stayed in German for a while. But, when the era of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono started, he came back to Indonesia and became the presidential advisor. When Joko Widodo became the seventh president of Indonesia, he became active as the presidential advisor and served as the president commissioner of PT Regio Aviasi Industri.

He died in RSPAD Gatot Subroto at 18.05 WIB on September 11th, 2019 because of heart failure. He was buried beside his wife in Taman Makam Pahlawan Kalibata slot 120 at 14.00 WIB on September 12th, 2019.

The most important point of time in his life was when he found a formula on counting crack propagation until the atoms of the plane. He called this formula "Habibie's Factor". That's why he is also called Mr. Crack.

B.J. Habibie is one of the greatest man in Indonesia and the world. With his great struggle, he can make Indonesia great again. We won't get this kind of man in 1000 years.
